Doug: Hey this is Doug Sutton here again with our expert interview series and today we have Darbe Schlosser and she’s in Las Vegas and she’s an expert trainer with a number of different modalities that she’s been working on with her clients and it’s just an honor to have her here today and Darbe I really appreciate you investing this time to join us.

Darbe: Thank you for inviting me.

Doug: Absolutely some curious Darbe if you don’t mind explaining what is it you actually do and tell us a little bit about your background?

Darbe: So, my company is called Motivation USA and I’ve broken down the biomechanics of boxing and I apply them to retraining coordination in people with brain disease and brain injury and I got involved in this because I’ve always been very passionate about sports and passionate about movement and I think that it took it took some education and going to school to realize that it was the movement of the sports that I was passionate about more than the competition so I didn’t pursue anything professionally with sports I didn’t take it to that next serious competitive level instead I went to school I took classes in anthropology I got very involved with how the how cognition and movement have evolved in parallel through bipedalism and a large brain and I got lucky because I was asked to do a boxing session with somebody who had Parkinson’s and I had my great aunt had Parkinson’s so I was very familiar with it but to the to the level of severe Parkinson’s because this is years ago 20 years ago when exercise wasn’t even thought of like you wouldn’t exercise if you had a brain disease that was absurd so it gave me an opportunity to really explore two fields I was familiar with and I saw positive results and then from there that’s what the program started to evolves.

Doug: Wow that’s amazing so you’ve had you were just naturally drawn into that there was one patient that had Parkinson’s disease and then it just started to evolve from there and turn into somewhat of a specialty it seems like for you.

Darbe: Yes I know I had the boxing down I understood box and I taught myself how to box and I was teaching myself how to box because I wanted to improve my golf swing and which I did but then you I didn’t have time to actually commit to the golf it’s too time-consuming and once I started working with boxing and brain disease I realized what I really should probably learn a little bit more about the brain so I took a fast-track course at UNLV on neuroscience and I’m still lucky and fortunate that I had the instructor I had Dr. Kenny um he the way he taught about the brain it was like I was watching something on screen of like a galaxy that was the unknown galaxy and it just drew me in and I’m like I want to learn more I want to learn more so I went to school then I got my degree in psychology and I did the neuroscience track and that’s when I started to look at boxing through a different lens started to look at it like not from the sport perspective but it’s one of the only sports that uses trajectories that take into consideration time and reward so that’s what reaching is you reach for something because there’s a desire to fulfill some intention that you have and boxing trajectories can actually mimic those same goal-oriented on tasks that you do with movement.

Doug: Right so there’s an understanding because I have a background I’ve done Muay Thai kickboxing so the boxing portion of it or the I can understand a little bit of what you’re saying so there’s if you don’t mind share the relationship then with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and how that movement actually helps to stimulate or work with the brain and what type of results you’ve actually seen or what the science might suggest.

Darbe: Okay sure so with Parkinson’s what we really try to look at is maintaining a moving base of support and learning how to partially adjust in an ever-changing environment and I’m the one who’s that ever-changing environment I don’t use patterns with anything so the person will eventually learn how to move within their base which is always changing depending on what their task at hand is and that allows for a much greater transfer ability to the outside chaotic unpredictable world and that’s what we’re trying to do we want to we want people to be successful in the program within the gym but to be able to also be successful with stepping outside into a busy street or to be able to go to a busy shopping center and know how to adjust and what happens is when they’re adjusting postural is their body’s actually changing shape depending on different tempos and there’s synchrony and how the world works you’re always moving at a different pace you’re not always moving at that same big movement you’re also going to be moving at small movements sometimes so we use different tempo changes of acceleration and deceleration so a person can be in control of their environment they can change the shape of their reaching trajectories based on how large their bases and once a person can learn how to contribute and control of that then the world is their oyster I like to say.

Doug: Wow, yeah so the boxing really does help with that and then it applies to many different areas of their life and I I’ve also found when I’ve trained consistently there is something in the neurological system where my focus my sensory acuity is better I have greater levels of concentration and even productivity in my life I’m more efficient with my actions just because I’m doing these drills over and over again so there is something to that it makes a lot of sense.

Darbe: Absolutely. Yeah with boxing you know people realize this but even when you’re when you’re hitting a heavy bag the heavy bag you can’t could to some extent you can control how it moves if you really know how to hit it but some people you know swing you all over the place as you move with that you’re using depth perception but then when you decide that you want to hit it depending on how close it is to your going to you’re going to use a certain angle and that’s really important because we can connect that also to gait patterns so I work with people then we’ll take the boxing which is connected to the same side of the body as ipsilateral movement but then we connect it to contralateral movement with marching with jogging in place so that they’re still able to work the both hemispheres of the brain and strengthen gait patterns because that’s the most important thing we don’t want them to lose gait pattern functioning because they’re throwing punches on the same side of the body so it’s constant on task switching and it can go to multiple levels but for Parkinson’s we can also commandeer the movement through thought processes and that is huge for people with Parkinson’s that have bradykinesia which is slowness in movement it’s that their body is weak it can’t move forcefully it’s that their effort of movement is not there the subjective effort and we can retrain that subjective expert through different motivation channels and that’s where the name motivation came from it’s the psychological component to movement which is action.

Doug: Wow that’s amazing so you know and it’s great that we’ve connected recently and I know that out of the location one of the locations that you actually happen to train out of in physical in Las Vegas we have a Hypervibe machine there and that’s something that’s a little bit newer that you’ve been utilizing to your practice yet there’s a lot of scientific research specifically for Parkinson’s disease and also for a number of different conditions so if you don’t mind sharing what your experience has been working with Hypervibe and how you became aware of it and some of the results that you’ve actually seen. they’re actually seen.

Darbe: Yes, absolutely so I’m very excited about the Hypervibe especially because it works it works alongside with what I’m trying to do and I everything that I do is coordination training but the problem is somebody gets diagnosed with Parkinson’s I’m very lucky if they find me right away usually they’ll find me a couple years after they are diagnosed and when they walk and move with poor posture their body’s developing improper movement patterns and it’s developing muscular skeletal you know tightness there’s limited range of motion axial rigidity their hips are tight their shoulders are tight I can correct that to some extent with movement training because we can retrain the brain to understand where the body is in space but that’s only to some extent if they already have muscular um tightness I need to take a corrective exercise approach I don’t have time to do that what I’ve noticed with what the Hypervibe is if I put my clients on there for 10 to 15 minutes before and after the session it loosens them up so that they can utilize full range of motion and they can really start to pull those shoulders forward and back and really open up that core rotation and get the full benefit of the program and then afterwards especially if we have an impact from using the heavy bag if they’re using mints they might get like a little more tight at the end of the training I put them on there their lower back pain will subside for the next three or four days or for the next session so it’s improving their quality of life at home it’s helping to take my program to another level in terms of what they can do within an hour session and I think that’s wonderful.

Doug: Wow, so it’s making your time that you have with each client much more efficient because they’re warmed up, they’re cooling down there’s less likelihood of any type of injury their neurological system their physiological systems activated so you can have a much greater amount of progress with the sessions that you’re having with your clients.

Darbe: Yes, I would say so yes absolutely.

Doug: Yeah that’s great and you know I know there’s a couple different things you know you’ve shared a couple stories if you don’t mind just you know a couple of different unique stories that you had with clients of yours whether it’s Parkinson’s or other type of clients that you’ve actually had where you’ve seen some great results.

Darbe: Yes so some one thing to with my Parkinson’s clients a lot of them are older and sometimes it’s not the Parkinson’s that’s getting away in the way of the training it’s you know sciatica and you know I don’t know if it was cause before or after but there’s other issues that they’re dealing with that is preventing the training so one particular individual with Parkinson’s he’s been having really severe lower back pain to the point where we’ll have to cut the session 30 minutes short put him on the Hypervibe after our session one day for 30 minutes and he came back ten days later because he was out of town didn’t have any pain in his lower back that’s the longest he’s gone without lower back pain in two years but not only that because he didn’t have that lower back pain he had the most successful efficient session with me that he has had in over a year and now I’m noticing that his coordination and his ability to connect his hands with his feet is improving because his mind is focused on actual training it’s not focused on the pain that he’s trying to set aside you know to focus though so that’s huge another case I can tell you is that I have a friend and he had a stroke and stroke went undiagnosed for about a week left him with severe spasticity his biggest issue is his digestive system he doesn’t feel hungry he doesn’t have an appetite he’s lost a lot of weight when he gets sick it’s harder for him to recover his immune system is not as you know strong as it used to be so when I put him on the machine he instantly had an appetite it’s almost like it’s stimulated his digestive system and it got things moving and he noticed that his heartburn went away so that I think is huge so many people especially Parkinson’s they have digestive and gut issues and if that if that can help a person that can greatly improve their quality of life getting all those toxins out and everything moving.

Doug: Yeah there’s quite a bit of science and you know in the links below we’ll have this on the website page that this is shared on of just access to being able to have information about the research that shows things such as to your first example that increased awareness is referred to as proprioception just understanding where your body is in time in space and having that level of awareness and whole body vibration when you utilize the most effective type of whole body vibration it does help with that dramatically and then also to your other most recent example with that increased circulation it affects every part of the body so when you’re having that circulation it certainly helps with the gut integrity in the and therefore the immune system has so many different functions with our relationship with our gut so it absolutely does help with that as well and you know just to speak into that there’s a couple different really important factors with the Hypervibe machine but I’m sure you’ve noticed one if you’ve ever looked at other whole body vibration platforms out there is the distinction with Hypervibe of having that pivotal platform that oscillating motion where it moves very similar to a teeter totter and in that natural movement it gets the hips moving in the natural movement of what the human physiology would have because our hips do move independently and then another thing that I know you’ve noticed that there are different ranges of frequencies that you put your clients on and you’re seeing different results right so there’s those lower frequencies if you’re wanting just to work on balance alone and they’re important to have you can do one-legged stands you can just do regular standing you can have people close their and on those lower frequencies it really does help with that and then if you’re really talking about the muscle stimulation and activation and however you ensure this before that you like those higher frequencies for that because that’s really where you get those results to activate and stimulate the muscles in that 18 to 20 hertz and above.

Darbe: Absolutely and the type of clients that I work with how my program works that’s what I need is I need I need those higher frequencies I’m not looking as much to challenge the balance but you get the body to relax and I do have a client with a traumatic brain injury and he’s not able to get the full benefit of the coordination training for me because of some cognitive deficits so we’re getting in there he’s coming along tremendously he’s speaking for the first time but I put him on the lower frequencies and I’m doing something the functional stability programs because it’s less on it’s less like executive function that he needs to use when he’s on the machine since it does it for him and he’s able to follow the diagram so that’s great right now with him and the results that I’m seeing I can still take the balanced train to another level with the machine without overwhelming his mind and his brain and everything and I and I can incorporate pieces of mind and together I think I’m going to get him to progress quickly or faster.

Doug: Okay so I’m curious also because I know you have some other research institutions and people that you’ve been working with and I can actually hear about your passions and your bigger vision of why you’re doing what you’re doing and some of the really unique relationships that you’ve been working on developing some of the studies that you’re doing your best to help contribute to and where this path is leading you.

Darbe: Yes so I recently collaborated with Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center in Las Vegas and our research studies should be commencing this summer we’re just in the final stages and that’s going to be really exciting I’m so happy to have them be a part of this and one of the things that I’m trying to do the research is going to give me the credibility and hopefully get more people more scientists the professionals talking about what I’m doing working to get my curriculum approved for physical therapy continuing education credits and with that I can start getting some of the therapists locally to implement the program so that people that can’t afford it can receive it through insurance there’s a local brain rehabilitation facility called Enza and a lot of the people that that are being seen there aren’t medicated and I’m working on getting funding through my nonprofit the motivation foundation so we can take a handful of those people every year put them through this program create a documentary series on it and have a gala and celebrate how all these individuals have improved and the biggest thing and what I get so passionate about is to be able to see somebody that has lost hope due to a disease due to an injury due to aging and I think that it’s something that it’s hard for us younger people to think about but to be able to worse into giving up what it is that you connect with that inner athlete and that inner athlete could be a basketball player it could be a woman that it’s really successful at cooking a dinner for eight people kids running all over the place handling her own it could be the tennis player it doesn’t have to be sports it’s whatever you identify with that that you connected with that you had to give up and so one thing that keeps me going with this is to see these people rediscover that inner athlete I got guys who come in that were playing basketball until they were 65 years old had two open-heart surgeries have Parkinson’s for five years and they’re now on the basketball court swishing half-court shots doing reverse around the back layups and boxing isn’t what I’m expecting them to fall in love with although most of them do because they look at it as something that saved their life or gave them their life back but I want them to be able to connect again with what that thing was that they lost and that’s just so exciting to see people being able to do that anywhere I’m up to nine years old.

Doug: Yeah that’s amazing and what I really appreciate about you and the conversations we’ve had offline as well as the people that we’ve been attracting and Hypervibe is that shared common value and to improve the quality of life for people around the world and there’s so many different health conditions that people have and you know the sad reality of it is if we’re fortunate enough to live a long life the body does have its it’s breakdowns over time and there is that natural deterioration that happens with our bodies and a big part of that is lack of mobility and movement and for whatever reason whether it’s business whether it’s family life whether it’s injury or some type of dis ease that happens in the body oftentimes people become less and less mobile and it can become the spiraling effect where it spirals out of control to the point where the quality of life starts to diminish dramatically and it accelerates in that direction and a big part of that is our lack of mobility and you know it said and it’s known and in science that the body does adapt to the environment that it’s in and just like with whole body vibration when that when the science was first starting to be researched with the human body it was to counter the negative effects of the body being in outer space and what they found is that when the body’s in outer space the bones become less dense the muscles start to atrophied a very fast rate the reason why is that again the body adapts to the environment and people talk about loosely and in a joking manner that if you go to cold climates your blood gets warmer and if you go to a warmer climate your blood gets thinner and or if you go out in the sun and you get a suntan the skin adapts then it becomes tan because it’s adapting to the environment that it’s in and so when people have busy schedules when they have disease in the body when they have injury or some other type of neurological condition that’s preventing them from moving therefore the body will start to deteriorate and just like you were speaking into with the one client who it often times and it’s not just a long time but many of your clients it’s not just the Parkinson’s disease that is the biggest challenge it might be lower back pain or sciatica or muscle atrophy because they’re not as active as they were so I love seeing people like you that are committed to improving the quality of life for people around the world and being part of research studies that’s one of the things that us at Hypervibe we have been very active about of you know donating our time our energy our attention and our resources to specific scientific studies and research to address some of these big health conditions that we’re having in our in our world to improve the quality of life for people and yes when you see those people there are 60 65 70 years old that are now able to go back on the basketball court or play golf or play tennis for the first time in years it does so much more than help their physical body it helps their emotional state the way they feel about themselves the sense of aliveness and an ability to interact in the world and there’s no real price you can put on that so I just want to acknowledge you and honor you for the path that you are on because the world needs more people like you doing what you do.

Darbe: Thank you and I want I would like to add to that to you a couple things you know working with Parkinson’s people just assume that the training that I do or even just using the Hypervibe it’s for the older population one thing I can say is I’ve worked with some of the younger healthy population and they struggle more to learn the coordination movement patterns and motor control training that I implement because of this new shift of lifestyle that the younger kids are a part of and it’s kids aren’t outside running around they aren’t climbing in there you know climbing trees are running down hills and I see it all the time when I work with these young healthy individuals and it’s scary because the older people that I work with they just assume well everybody can do this I’m like no you would think they could but it’s so important I think to also look at the younger healthy population to make sure that they’re moving more than in coordinating more than just their thumbs so I think there’s also a market for the Hypervibe just for young people to get them activated to get them loose and to get them on you know building those movement patterns since the sedentary lifestyles have been overtaking you know the world so that’s one comment I want or if you want to add to that.

Doug: 100 percent Darbe I really appreciate you bringing that up because we are part of a couple research studies with some institutions one as an example with a childhood obesity foundation that is it is it’s so fortunate in your right the difference today and our younger generation of because of technology it’s a blessing and a curse because there’s so many great things about technology and it’s also sadly there’s so many young kids that are just not physically active like they used to be and you know to your point with the older generation there is that that concept of muscle memory that once you’ve done something even though you mean that I’ve done it in years the body will quickly go back to that pattern because it had learned it at one time.

Darbe: Exactly, you have that history to go back to those roots and foundation.

Doug: Right, right you’ll be reintroduced to something that they that they know inherently that they did at one time and in with the younger generation oftentimes they never develop those positive habits and how do we get them off the starting block or off their couch and start to move in a way that’s not just going to help them in the immediate but set them up for a longer term quality of life as they age and get older because if we don’t if they don’t then then they won’t they won’t experience that quality of life that so many of us want to be able to have as we as we get older and it is incredibly important so I really appreciate you bringing that up that both with boxing and I’m a just a tremendous advocate of martial arts training because you know oftentimes people on the outside Darbe that that don’t understand the benefits of boxing they connotates that are associated with fighting or with actually being hit and then actually experiencing brain trauma from hitting that’s not what you’re referring to and I know that you’re actually referring to hitting pads that emits doing drills and it does train the brain and the years that I’ve studied martial arts and it’s been for well over 20 years of my life that I’ve been very consistent with the martial arts training I’ve found that when I’m training consistently my focus my mental clarity my productivity just the way I feel about myself is all increased by just an incredible factor because I’m doing that training and it’s very important for people to understand that distinction with boxing training that you’re not talking about putting people in the ring and getting hit this is treatment.

Darbe: Yes, exactly the general population they see boxing with what they see on TV which is you know those few minutes in the ring they don’t see the life time training that takes place to be able to even endure three-minute rounds so yes that’s I also wanted to make another comment too. So sometimes I think it’s unfortunate its but for it has a good outcome and a positive outcome but it’s unfortunate that it takes a diagnosis of a disease or an injury to get people motivated but what I see which I think is so amazing is the heaviest older people come in and you have the spouse and they’re so afraid of my husband he’s sick he has this degenerative disease and we need to get it better and they kind of coddle him and they take care of him and we got to make a fragile little person let’s make him strong let’s make him you know strong and stable again so we can continue you know to live through his seventies now what happens is these people come to the program and they become so passionate about it too and they see the benefits and it becomes a routine and they’re making into such good shape that now the spouse that brought the little weakling in is overweight or not exercising and then they start to get motivated by their partner that they saw maybe in like that week light they now see this this person this warrior this like survivor and it motivates them and now the entire family is on a transformation of a healthy lifestyle it’s not just that disease is it’s just having an unhealthy an active lifestyle that so many people have it when they jump on that healthy train it helps the entire family dynamic which is huge.

Doug: It’s that momentum and that motivation begins with that momentum on some level whether it’s just a thought a belief a decision that someone makes and then they start taking action and then that can have a ripple effect not just with me but also their friendships their local community there’s so many different examples of that where whether it’s a positive thing or a negative thing you know there’s studies that have you know someone’s smoking cigarettes and they’re hanging around people that are doing that one person quits the likelihood of their friends quitting increases by a dramatic percentage just because one person took that action or if one person starts to exercise and get healthy and get in shape they have an effect on the people around them in their life so they’re not only transforming their own health they’re contributing to the quality of life for people around them and it works both ways so we want to make sure that we’re doing what we can to play our role to support people in taking positive actions that are going to result in a greater quality of life again regardless of the health condition someone’s showing up what they may not have a disease present right now on their body and each one of us can benefit dramatically from taking actions that will improve that quality of life yeah.

Darbe: Amen, amen to that.
